Our Mission Statement
The mission of The Marco Players is to provide a venue, and a professional environment, for performers and theater-goers alike to experience entertaining, meaningful, high quality theatrical productions that benefit the community, our volunteers and local community organizations.
When The Marco Players raises the curtain on its 2011-2012 season, it will be the organization’s 37th Anniversary. Started in the 1970’s as a children’s play reading group, it was eventually re-created as an adult community theater known as The Marco Island Players. Originally, a for profit theater, the Players incorporated several years later as a non-profit corporation, now known as The Marco Players. With its new standing as a non-profit, 501(c)3, the theater would be eligible to apply for government grants that would help with the future growth of the theater.
For many years the theater had no home base. Performances were done at the Radisson, Marriot and Hilton hotels, Marco Island Town Center and local restaurants. Then, thirteen years ago, with the cooperation of Marco Island Town Center, The Marco Players settled into its current space. Much has changed since then. In 2004, thanks to generous supporters and a grant from the Collier County Arts Foundation--plus a Herculean effort by volunteers--the theater was completely remodeled with theater seating, risers, carpeting and a new stage.
Several years ago, the theater added a fourth production to our season and extended our productions from twelve performances a show to fifteen. In addition, we added the Ladies Who Lunch Series performing on three separate Saturdays, now known as the Lunch Box series. This series creates an opportunity for our theater patrons to enjoy professional, solo performances in an intimate setting. Last season, with the help of many dedicated volunteers, we added our new website and on-line ticketing. In November, we removed the “infamous” pole in the middle of our theater giving our audiences a completely unobstructed view of our stage.
This is only the beginning. Keep watching. See you at the theater.
